Honour-based abuse, is when someone is controlled or harmed because their family or community believes they have brought shame or dishonour to them. “Honour” is often used as an excuse, but it is never a justification, it is a violation of human rights. These are some examples of how “honour”-based abuse can begin, often through control, pressure, and expectations about behaviour and choices.
“Honour”-based abuse may start slowly but it can escalate into serious harm including forced marriage, threats, violence, or physical abuse.
It is important to remember that honour-based abuse can affect anyone, anywhere. If this is happening to you, or someone you know, you are not alone, and there is free and confidential support available contact Karma Nirvana: 0800 599 9247 and the Forced Marriage Unit: 020 7008 0151
